Thank you to constituents who have contacted me about Furnished Holiday lettings and the abolishment of the FHL tax regime.
I understand the concern from business owners, and I recognise the role holiday lets play in contributing to the local economy, bringing investment, creating jobs and supporting tourism. It is important to highlight that the Government backs small businesses, including short-term holiday letting. At the same time, it is important to acknowledge the impact that large numbers of holiday lets concentrated in one area have on local communities.
The Government plan to abolish the Furnished Holiday Lettings tax regime will eliminate the tax advantage for landlords who prioritise short-term furnished holiday properties over those who let residential properties to longer-term tenants. This ensures the system is equal for those letting long or short term. I understand the disappointment at this decision, and recognise the many benefits short-term holiday lets bring, however, it will level the playing field between short-term and long-term lets and support people to live in their local area.
