Thank you for reaching out to me regarding support for people with arthritis. I value your concerns and understand the importance of providing timely and effective care for individuals living with this condition.

Thank you for all those who invited me to attend the Summer Drop-In hosted by Versus Arthritis on Monday 3rd of July. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the event due to my other parliamentary duties, however, a member of my team was able to go in my place.

Reducing waiting times for operations, including hip and knee replacement surgeries that are often required by people with arthritis, is an urgent priority for the Government. To address this issue, a significant funding commitment of £5.4 billion has been made to alleviate the backlog of operations, to help people receive the necessary care in a timely manner. Additionally, the number of surgical hubs will be expanded to facilitate more hip and knee replacements in a COVID-secure environment.

NHS England has taken crucial steps to support individuals waiting for treatment through its recovery plan for elective care in England. As part of this initiative, the My Planned Care platform has been launched to provide people on waiting lists with essential information and support. It is essential that local NHS bodies maintain clear communication channels with individuals waiting for surgery, particularly those with arthritis, informing them about their expected treatment timeline and providing information on available support. Charities like Versus Arthritis play a vital role in offering assistance and guidance, and individuals should be signposted to these valuable resources.

Recognising the impact of major health conditions, including arthritis, on individuals' well-being, the Government has committed to developing a Major Conditions Strategy. This strategy, set to be published in the coming year, will outline plans to improve outcomes in six major condition areas, including arthritis. The Department of Health and Social Care has already conducted a call for evidence for the Major Conditions Strategy, gathering valuable insights from experts and stakeholders. The findings will be released in due course, shaping the future direction of improved care and support for individuals with arthritis.

I want to assure you that the Government recognises the importance of addressing the needs of individuals living with this condition. Efforts are underway to reduce waiting times for operations, increase surgical capacity, and improve communication channels to provide better support for those awaiting treatment. By working collaboratively and investing in improved care and support, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of millions of people affected by arthritis.

Thank you once again for all those who reached out to me regarding support for people with arthritis.
