I am proud that the RAF played its part in an international effort to intercept the missiles Iran and its proxies launched at Israel overnight on 13th April; by successfully preventing almost all of these missiles from reaching their target, the RAF's efforts saved lives in Israel and in neighbouring countries.
I understand that the Ministry of Defence have since moved several additional Typhoons and air refuelling tankers to the region in order to bolster Operation Shader - the UK’s existing counter-Daesh operation in Iraq and Syria. I have been assured that these jets will continue to intercept any airborne attacks within range of the UK’s existing missions, as required.
The UK condemns, in the strongest terms, the Iranian regime’s reckless attack against Israel. These strikes risk inflaming tensions and destabilising the region. Iran has, once again, demonstrated that it is intent on sowing chaos in its own backyard. Alongside our allies, the UK has worked to stabilise the situation and prevent further escalation. No one wants to see more bloodshed.
The UK Government is clear: there is no justification for Iran’s decision to launch more than 300 drones and missiles towards Israel. The UK will continue to stand up for Israel’s security - as well as its right to defend itself - and that of all our regional partners, including Jordan and Iraq.
