Sanctions on Russia

In lockstep with allies around the world, the UK has:

  • Designated more than 1,600 individuals, over 220 entities to sanctions, in addition to freezing the assets of 29 Russian banks with global assets of £1 trillion.
  • Sanctioned Russian officials who have enforced the conscription and mobilisation of citizens to fight in this illegal war.
  • Extended a Crimea-type embargo to occupied territory in the breakaway Ukrainian republics and sanctioned Kremlin-imposed ‘officials’ in Luhansk and Donetsk for enforcing the Russian regime’s illegal sham referendums, which are a clear violation of international law.
  • Banned the Russian State and over three million Russian companies from raising funds in the UK, removed selected banks from the SWIFT international payments system, and worked to prevent Russia from obtaining financing from the leading multilateral financial institutions, including the International Monetary Fund and World Bank – crippling Putin’s regime of access to finance.
  • Sanctioned defence sector organisations and banned the export of critical technologies – paralysing Russia’s military-industrial development - and implemented new sanctions on Iranian parties responsible for supplying Russia with kamikaze drones.
  • Imposed billions of pounds worth of trade sanctions on Russia and Belarus, including export bans on every item Russia has been found using on the battlefield to date. UK import restrictions now apply to over £13.5 billion of Russian exports.
  • Banned all imports of Russian oil and oil products on 5 December 2022 and Russian Liquefied Natural Gas on 1 January 2023.
  • Together with G7 partners, banned the provision of tankers and shipping-related services, such as insurance and finance, to vessels carrying Russian oil above an agreed price cap of $60 per barrel.
  • Banned Russian aircraft from flying or landing in the UK, prevented them selling their unused, lucrative landing slots, and banned their ships from our ports  – cutting Russia off from the international community.
  • Supported international sporting boycotts against Russia and Belarus.
  • Passed new urgent legislation giving Government new powers to crack down on corrupt elites in the UK.

These internationally coordinated measures collectively amount to the biggest, most devastating package of sanctions imposed against a single country in history.
