The Government has a clear stance when it comes to the situation in the Middle East. The UK recognise the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people and support a lasting solution that benefits both Israelis and Palestinians.
However, it is crucial to understand that Hamas, as an organisation, does not represent the Palestinian people's legitimate aspirations. It's stated purpose for being is to kill Jews and extinguish the existence of the State of Israel. It promotes the establishment of an Islamic Palestinian state under Sharia law and has long been involved in terrorist violence. It offers nothing for the Palestinian people other than more terror and more bloodshed.
Hamas was proscribed as a terrorist organisation in its entirety in the UK in November 2021, following Parliament's approval. This action was taken after careful consideration and in line with the stance of the United States and the European Union, who also list Hamas as a terrorist organisation. In the UK, being a member of Hamas or inviting support for the group is a criminal offence, and those found guilty could face significant penalties, including imprisonment for up to 14 years. We must be unwavering in our commitment to combating terrorism under all circumstances.
It must also be recognised that the Palestinian people are suffering terribly. Over 4,000 Palestinians have been killed in this conflict. They are also the victims of Hamas, who embed themselves in the civilian population. Too many lives have already been lost, and the humanitarian crisis is growing.
Hamas care more about their paymasters in Iran than the children they hide behind. There is no scenario where Hamas can be allowed to control Gaza or any part of the Palestinian territories. Therefore, the UK Government is committed to diplomatic engagement and has taken strong action, including sanctions on more than 350 Iranian individuals and entities, including the IRGC in its entirety. Our Navy presence is crucial to prevent illegal arms shipments to entities such as Hezbollah, and the UK is working with leaders across the region to ensure that those who would exploit this situation for their own ends are deterred.
I want to assure you that the UK, in collaboration with its allies, is dedicated to promoting stability and peace in the region and preventing further escalation of the conflict. The path to a better future for the Middle East involves addressing the complex issues at hand, and we are committed to those efforts.
