Thank you to all those who contacted me and shared your concerns regarding the Energy Bill. I appreciate you taking the time to voice your opinions and raise important questions about this legislation.
On Tuesday (05/07/23) night, a series of amendments to the Energy Bill were put to voting, this is an important step in its progression through Parliament. A number of constituents have contacted me regarding this Bill, and I know it is of great significance to many.
As you may know, the overarching goal of the Energy Bill is to bolster the resilience and reliability of our energy systems nationwide, while simultaneously supporting the UK ambitious commitments to combat climate change. At its core, this legislation seeks to reform our energy system, making it more adaptable for the future, all while safeguarding consumers from unfair pricing and minimising overall costs.
To realise these objectives, the Bill is structured around three pivotal pillars:
- Liberating Investment in Clean Technologies: Encouraging investment in environmentally friendly technologies that will pave the way for a sustainable energy future.
- Reforming the UK's Energy System: Adapting our energy infrastructure to meet the challenges of tomorrow, ensuring it remains robust and resilient.
- Ensuring Safety and Security: Prioritising the safety and security of our energy system, safeguarding it against unforeseen challenges.
This will be achieved through reforms, such as through reforming the current energy code governance framework, granting Ofgem new functions to provide strategic direction and oversight on codes, and creating a new class of more independent code managers to deliver an improved system for consumers and competition.
The House of Lords will now consider the amendments we voted on, on Tuesday night as the Bill edges towards receiving Royal Assent and becoming Law. The Bill will help bring about vital changes that will shape the future of our energy system, providing cleaner, more affordable, and more secure energy.
