Wealden and Bexhill & Battle MPs Nus Ghani and Huw Merriman have spoken in a debate about the roll-out of superfast broadband at the House of Commons.
The debate allowed them the opportunity to argue for continued investment in the basic broadband network, which remains unsatisfactory for many of their constituents.
Nus Ghani called on BT and BDUK, the broadband provider, to be more transparent about their negotiations over network upgrades, and on the Government to make sure that no one, particularly elderly people in rural areas, is left behind as urban areas receive investment.
Nus Ghani said: “Broadband is no longer a luxury, but a vital necessity, for small businesses, for farmers and for families. I urge all those organisations who have a stake in the roll-out of broadband to get round the table, iron out any problems and help create a rural powerhouse. It’s 2015 and my constituents deserve better service and better coverage than they get”.
Speaking in the debate, Huw Merriman said: "With 15% of East Sussex's local residents self-employed, above the national average, and over half of the local workforce employed in small firms, the need for a complete broadband coverage solution is even more vital in constituencies such as Bexhill and Battle and the Government needs to help us find one".
