Huw at Salehurst School

Huw Merriman, MP for the Bexhill and Battle constituency, recently visited Salehurst CE Primary School in Robertsbridge to talk to pupils about their visit to Parliament at the end of last year and to answer their questions about the role of an MP and the workings of the House of Commons.

In a hour long session with Years 5 and 6, Huw briefly explained about how MPs are elected, what MPs do all day, UK political parties and the role of Government. The pupils then asked him questions about what its like to work in Parliament and they talked to him how government allocates funding. The MP asked the pupils where they would spend more money if they could. They were keen for money to be spent on education, helping people and looking after the environment.

After the visit Huw said “Visiting schools is one of the highlights of my job. I love to hear from young people about what their priorities are and to answer their questions about being an MP, life in Westminster and the constituency. We had a good discussion about the national budget and what they would spend taxes on if they were in charge with lots of different views being shared.”

Comments from the pupils included “ It was interesting to hear about what an MP does in their job.” and “The talk made the pupils think about how hard it must be deciding how much money is allocated to different areas.”

Statement from Huw Merriman MP

Thursday, 23 May, 2024
After 9 years as the Member of Parliament for Bexhill and Battle, I have made the decision not to stand as a candidate at the next election. This means I will also leave my job as Rail Minister on 4 July. I have loved being an MP and I leave with a heavy heart.
