Local MP, Huw Merriman, today visited the Wiltshire Farm Foods depot in Westham to learn about their recycling scheme which is helping to reduce packaging waste.
Under their programme, plastic trays are collected from customers and recycled into completely new trays containing a minimum of 80% recycled plastic. The Government plans to introduce new regulations for what is called “extended producer responsibility” (EPR), to tackle the growing problem of packaging waste. These regulations aim to shift the waste and recycling costs of packaging from local authorities to the businesses that produce it; a principle that industry is supportive of.
Speaking after the visit, Huw commented:
"I was pleased to visit Wiltshire Farm Food's depot in Westham and learn more about their recycling scheme. It was really useful to hear about what industry is already doing to encourage greater packaging waste recycling and to receive feedback on Government proposals."
Wiltshire Farm Foods currently delivers its prepared meals to more than 150,000 customers nationwide, with an estimated 16,223 people over 75 living in our constituency.
