Bexhill and Battle constituency MP, Huw Merriman, today visited London Bridge station to meet Network Rail and Southeastern to understand better how they manage surges in passenger numbers around the station during periods of disruption.
Disruption to train services, such as cases of trespassers on the line or signal failures, means that trains are consequently delayed. This results in a build up of passengers in and around the station. During his visit, Huw was shown how station staff monitor numbers of passengers on platforms in real time and ensure that, when needed, people are directed away from the platforms until there’s a safe amount of space for them to wait for their trains there.
Speaking after the visit, Huw said:
"Concerns have previously been raised with me by constituents who travel by train to London - both those commuting for work, or just visiting for the day - about overcrowding and passenger safety at London Bridge at peak times and during periods of disruption.
"Today's visit was very useful, both in my role as Rail Minister and as constituency MP, to better understand the measures that Network Rail and Southeastern have put in place to ensure passengers remain safe at the station during the busiest times of day."
