Local MP, Huw Merriman, has today welcomed Government proposals to reform the private rental market to support responsible tenants and landlords.
Many people in our constituency are in the private rented sector, as either tenants or landlords. The Renters’ (Reform) Bill, which was introduced to Parliament this afternoon, will deliver safer, fairer, and higher quality homes for the 11 million tenants across England, whilst the more than 2 million landlords in the sector will also see greater protections.
Commenting on the proposals, Huw said:
"This legislation is designed to support responsible tenants and landlords.
"For renters, the Bill delivers on the Conservatives' 2019 election manifesto pledge to abolish Section 21 evictions, also known as ‘no fault’ evictions. This will empower renters to challenge poor landlords without fear of losing their home. For responsible landlords, new laws will make it easier for them to recover their properties when they need to, including when tenants wilfully do not pay rent. Notice periods will also be reduced where tenants have been irresponsible, such as causing damage to properties.
"I look forward to following the progress of the Bill through Parliament."
