For less than a penny in every pound, it is estimated that UK aid saves a life every two minutes. The Aid Transparency Index which measures effective aid spending, ranks the Department for International Development's (DFID) spending as the third most effective in the world and ‘very good’. Huw spoke in the House of Commons of the power of our aid and why we should spend it via DFID and not in other departments who do not have the track record or expertise. It was essential, he said, to stand up for a department that spends that money very well.

Statement from Huw Merriman MP

Thursday, 23 May, 2024
After 9 years as the Member of Parliament for Bexhill and Battle, I have made the decision not to stand as a candidate at the next election. This means I will also leave my job as Rail Minister on 4 July. I have loved being an MP and I leave with a heavy heart.
