I’ve loved politics for a long time and look forward to studying the subject at University. The week I spent working with Huw and his office only brought home how much I care for the subject. I was amazed by the work done by Huw and his team on such an extensive range of issues, and despite having been unsure what to expect, I quickly settled in and got involved.
The four days I spent in Westminster were incredible: I was able to watch the Prime Minister deliver a statement on the EU, I attended meetings on topics ranging from transport, health and social care to Universal Credit, and I learnt a huge amount from researching the numerous tasks that Huw was preparing to undertake. Frances, the team’s Parliamentary Manager, was wonderful in helping me apply for the work experience and whilst I was in London, Huw’s Parliamentary Assistant, Greg, made sure my time there was consistently exciting and interesting. Working in such a fast-paced environment certainly kept me on my toes, and it was quite surreal to experience politics unfolding from inside Parliament.
I spent just one day working in the constituency, but I loved experiencing local politics. It was great to meet so many passionate constituents who work really hard in their communities. It was moving to see the personal commitment that Huw has to his constituents through sitting in on several surgeries, too. The experience as a whole was one which I most definitely won’t forget and I’m immensely grateful that some politicians such as Huw are choosing to play such a big part in including young people in politics.
