A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity of spending a week shadowing our local MP during his constituency engagements. For the first two days, I spent my time within the constituency office in Bexhill, learning about the role of an MP and aiding Huw’s team in their work. Huw set me daily assignments- firstly to investigate the local businesses (in aid of a new business club initiative), and secondly, to research local housing association building plans; these were interesting and at times challenging tasks.
On my final two days, I followed Huw during his tour of the constituency. We visited Sussex Police Headquarters in Lewes and I gained an insight into the different teams within the police force. We also held meetings with East Sussex County Council regarding Broadband in the wider community. My final day was the most enjoyable I feel: Firstly, we visited the Hastings Furniture Store and we learnt about their apprenticeship scheme - I found out just how insightful such places can be. In the afternoon, Huw held a constituency surgery at the Bexhill office, and I saw how the team help the local people with their problems- they do this with gentle care and attention. Sadly, my week shadowing Huw Merriman had to come to an end.
This experience has inspired me to pursue a career in politics; I am thoroughly grateful for experience, and thank all those at the Bexhill Office for their kindness.
