Our Parliamentary Football team this week pitted our meagre sporting talents against a team of ex-professionals for a match at Stamford Bridge. The game was to highlight the campaign to show ‘Racism the Red Card’. Whilst violence on the terraces has reduced over the decades, incidents of abuse towards players, and opposing fans, for the colour of their skin, still brings shame on the game. Despite playing against 30 goal per season, ex-Chelsea and Holland player, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and others, our team went down by only 9-5. Having played out on the right-wing before moving to central midfield, I can report that it was not a great advert for defending on either side but the important part was the cause we were championing. It was great to be joined by pupils from a school in Croydon, who were the winners of a competition to design a campaign. Over 900 schools took part.
