Last Friday, Huw Merriman, the MP for the Bexhill and Battle constituency visited St Peter and St Paul CE Primary School in Bexhill to meet the School Council and have a tour of some of the school’s new facilities.
During the tour, the MP was very interested to see the Design Technology room which has also been set up for cooking. The pupils told him about the cooking clubs and how much they enjoyed getting involved in cooking and learning about healthy foods.
They then visited the new standalone music suite which was built next to a special new garden created by staff and pupils to commemorate the late Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee. The garden includes a huge bug hotel which the pupils explained was there to help wildlife flourish as the school community is keen on supporting nature and looking after the environment.
After the tour, Huw joined the rest of the school council to answer their questions about what he does, what he has achieved and his priorities. When asked what they liked best about their role and the councillors told him it was being able to make decisions and have an input into school life and activities.
Finally, Huw asked the School Council what they would like to change about Bexhill which would make it better for children and young people. They had lots of ideas including planting more trees, reducing pollution and litter, more parks, and building more homes to prevent homelessness.
After the visit Huw said “It was great to visit St Peter and St Paul’s school and meet the school council. The councillors clearly take their job representing their classmates very seriously. They are also clearly passionate about caring for the people and environment of Bexhill. I look forward to helping them with their projects and welcome their input into how we can make Bexhill town an even better place to live for all generations.”
Angie Ford, Deputy Head said “It was really good for Huw visit and talk with our School Council members. It is important that our children learn about democracy and how it works as these children are our leaders of tomorrow."
