Before Christmas, the Minister for Water, Robbie Moore MP, wrote to me regarding Bathing Water classifications for 2023.
Nationally 95.7% of bathing waters have met at least the minimum standard of Sufficient, with 66.4% meeting the highest standard of Excellent. The Minister advised me that Bexhill has been rated as Sufficient.
Tackling sewage pollution and improving the quality of local bathing waters is one of my key priorities for the constituency. Whilst the Environment Agency classification is helpful, I am concerned that it may not present an entirely accurate and rounded picture of the true quality of local bathing waters. I have now written to the Minister to call for a more diverse testing regime and to request a meeting with him to discuss this issue further.
