Bexhill MP, Huw Merriman, joined the school councillors at Little Common school for a discussion about the role of an MP and how this is similar to their roles of being a school councillor.
Pupils from Year 1 to Year 6, who have been elected to their school council by their classmates, asked Huw a number of questions about his job including “What is it like in Parliament?” “Do you enjoy your job?” and “Is your job busy?”
Huw chatted to the pupils about life in Parliament and how the weekly sessions like PMQs which can get a bit rowdy are not truly representative of the normal business of Parliament. He talked about his new role as Rail Minister and how this job meant that he has never been busier as an MP than he is now. He told the pupils that he enjoyed the work and challenges and commended them for taking on the responsibility of representing their classmates on the school council which can sometimes be a difficult job.
Following their meeting, Huw attended the whole school assembly to help Deputy Headteacher, Mrs Moor, present the Star of the Week Certificates, Millionaire reading badges and Talent Show certificates.
Huw Merriman said “It is always such a great pleasure to visit Little Common School to spend time with their school councillors to talk about our shared responsibilities in representing people. They had some great questions for me. It was also an honour to present certificates to all those who had worked so hard during the school week either at their studies or in being kind and considerate towards others. I have invited the school council to Parliament and I look forward to welcoming them to Westminster later this year.”
Deputy Head, Mrs Moor, said "The children were very interested to meet Huw and learn about his role as MP. They thoroughly enjoyed asking him questions and I was impressed with the ideas they came up with for discussion and their confidence. It was a really valuable experience for them"
