On Friday, Huw Merriman MP for Bexhill and Battle visited college to debate a variety of political issues with our students. Huw commented:
“I always enjoy meeting the students at Bexhill College to talk about my role as the local MP and to debate subjects of national and local interest. This year it was particularly interesting to find out that the majority of students were keen for the government to get on with the Brexit process and be positive about it. There was little enthusiasm in the room for delaying or trying to reverse our departure from the EU. We also had a good debate on wide variety of issues including what an MP is in post to do, Donald Trump, the cost of public transport and the NHS. It reinforced to me that our local young people students are very clued up on current affairs and it was great to hear them share their views.”
We are always appreciative of Huw’s visits as they enrich the learning that takes place within the classroom. This view is shared by our students.
Vita Borzella-North studies A Levels in Politics, English Literature and Media Studies. In her view:
“Huw Merriman conducted himself with great decorum and it was interesting to hear his views on Brexit to social services. This event will certainly help me with the synoptic part of my forthcoming Politics exam.”
Rosie Hughes shared Vita’s sentiments. As a student of Politics and Sociology, she also found the event rewarding:
“The debate with Huw Merriman was very interesting and focused on some very important subjects. I appreciated his interest in the opinions of his younger constituents and his intent to help the local area.”
Huw concluded that:
“It was interesting that the majority of students did not support, unlike me, votes for 16 years old. I will clearly need to sharpen up my arguments!”
This event was the latest in the wide-ranging enrichment programme offered to the students at Bexhill 6th Form College. The next event is fast approaching and will see our Business and Economics students take part in the ICAEW’s national Business, Accounting & Skills Education competition.
