During Easter recess, I visited the team at Bexhill Museum to see their latest exhibitions and hear about their exciting plans for growth.

It was a privilege to tour the museum with Curator, Julian Porter, Chair of Trustees, Sally Hemmings  and Business Manager, Rohan Jayasekera.  Bexhill Museum is a great visitor attraction for both tourists and local residents. Year on year it increases its visitor numbers with its permanent and temporary exhibitions and a wide range of activities.

The museum was recently successful in securing a £390k Museum Estate Development Fund grant from the Department for Culture, Media and Sports for essential repairs.  Their next project is to move the public toilets which serve Egerton Park visitors into a bespoke new toilet block in the park. The current facility is dated and regularly vandalised.  To achieve this, they need additional funding which I am doing my best to help them secure as it will allow the museum to create new exhibition space as well as accessible learning and classroom space with direct access for disabled visitors from the park.

Staff & volunteers do an outstanding job in keeping the museum fresh & interesting. It is  a great community & educational asset & a top-class visitor attraction for Bexhill which I am keen to support.

Statement from Huw Merriman MP

Thursday, 23 May, 2024
After 9 years as the Member of Parliament for Bexhill and Battle, I have made the decision not to stand as a candidate at the next election. This means I will also leave my job as Rail Minister on 4 July. I have loved being an MP and I leave with a heavy heart.
